Roberts, Burgee Lead Volleyball in Loss to Mary Washington

WESTMINSTER, Md. - McDaniel College volleyball junior Nia Roberts and sophomore Allyson Burgee combined for 11 kills in the team's 25-13, 25-17, 25-16 loss to Mary Washington Wednesday at the Gill Center.

The Green Terror (1-7) were limited by 18 attack errors and seven reception errors.

Roberts led the team with eight kills while Burgee had three kills and a team-high .333 hitting percentage. Sophomore Angalyn Strouse also had three kills and added six digs.

First Set

McDaniel fell behind 6-1 in the opening set before rallying with three consecutive points, two of which came on kills by Burgee and Strouse. The Green Terror cut the lead to 7-6 on a second kill by Burgee before a 4-0 run by the Eagles increased their lead to 11-6.

Leading 17-10, the visitors scored seven of the next eight points, including five on four McDaniel attack errors and one service error.

Second Set

The Green Terror fared much better in the second, totaling nine kills as the set featured four ties and four lead changes over the first 17 points. With the home team leading 8-6, Mary Washington scored the next seven consecutive points, including three on kills by Krista Rogers and three on errors by the Green Terror.

However, McDaniel responded with six of the next eight points, scoring four on errors by the Eagles, to pull within one, 15-14.

That would be as close as the Green Terror would get as Mary Washington pushed its advantage to 20-15 before scoring the final two points on McDaniel attack errors.

Third Set

The Eagles jumped out to a 12-2 lead in the third where they totaled 15 kills and a .209 hitting percentage. They also had 14 more attack attempts than the Green Terror who trailed by as many as 13 points, 21-8.

McDaniel returns to action on Saturday when it welcomes Haverford to Gill for a Centennial Conference contest beginning at 1 p.m.
