Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

McDaniel Uses Balanced Attack to Beat Griffins

GWYNEDD VALLEY, Pa. - The McDaniel men's soccer team found the back of the net six times in a 6-1 victory on the road against Gwynedd Mercy Monday at The Griffin Complex.

The Green Terror (6-1-0) attacked early and often against the Griffins. Less than three minutes into the game, McDaniel freshman Jorge Herrera beat his defender and took a shot that was saved by goalkeeper John Wagner. Sophomore Nick Lewis followed up with a shot of his own, but it deflected off a defender.

In the ninth minute, freshman Noah Rodriguez crossed the ball into the box where senior Nick Starr leaped up and headed it past Wagner for a 1-0 lead.

The Green Terror kept the ball in the attacking third for most of the first half and senior Gage Souder found an opening in the defense before connecting for his second goal of the game.

With McDaniel leading by two, Gywnedd Mercy (1-6) held its own for a long stretch of the opening period. However, with just three minutes remaining until halftime, the Green Terror controlled the ball just above the box. Sophomore Justin Winborne-Freeman and freshman Conor O'Brien combined to play a perfect ball into scoring position for freshman Anthony Suarez who converted to give the visitors a 3-0 advantage heading into the break.

The second half began with more of the same pressure. McDaniel's back line and midfield continued to push forward and take away passing lanes from the Griffins.

In the 60th minute, freshman Jorge Herrera lined up a free kick, drilling it past the goalkeeper for the fourth goal of the afternoon.

Sophomore Luke Mason received a pass from Nick Lewis in the 69th minute and attempted to head it into the goal, but it went high off the crossbar. Mason stuck with it and connected on the rebound with another header for his first goal of the game.

As time expired, McDaniel continued to spread the ball around as graduate student Joel Afata Molete found an opening in the defense off a corner kick. He jumped up and converted on a header for the six and final goal of the game off assists from sophomore Drew Ryder and freshman Joshua Martins.

The Green Terror out-shot Gwynedd Mercy, 45-1.

McDaniel returns to action at home on Saturday with a Centennial Conference contest against Franklin & Marshall. Game time is scheduled for 1 p.m.
