Starr capitalizes late as win streak reaches five

BALTIMORE, Md. - The Green Terror found the back of the net twice to stay unbeaten on the season.

In a tightly contested first half in which both teams played aggressively from the opening whistle, McDaniel's (5-0) steady defense kept the Gophers (3-1-2) offense in check. In the 13th minute of action freshman midfielder Jorge Herrera found fellow freshman AJ Nordone who connected for the first goal of the game.

The Gophers offense started to pick up the tempo, and created three opportunities late in the first half. Senior goalkeeper Austin Heid came up with a pair of big saves including one just before the half that kept the Green Terror in front heading into the break.

The second half started off much like the first. Four fouls were called in the first few minutes of the second period. In total 34 fouls and eight yellow cards were handed out during the course of the game. In the 55th minute Goucher was able to get on the board with a goal by Ali Kazim Nahkid. With the score tied, the Green Terror needed to refocus and gain back the momentum.

After the goal the chippy play continued, but McDaniel was able to get back on track offensively. In the 60th minute Nordone found an opening, but his shot sailed just over the crossbar. A few minutes later Goucher was back on the offensive when a shot from Jeremiah Odubade went wide left of the goal. The back and forth play continued for most of the second half.

In the 79th minute sophomore midfielder Gustavo Wong-Silva created space and launched a shot that went wide of the frame. After the Goal kick, McDaniel regained possession near midfield, Herrera looked ahead and saw graduate student Nick Starr cutting behind the Goucher defense. He played it ahead and Nick Starr took it deep in the box where he was eventually fouled.

McDaniel was awarded a penalty kick and Starr was the one to take it. He placed the ball down on the mark and stepped back assessing the situation. He then approached the ball and struck it with his right foot launching it past the keeper to keep the Green Terror's unbeaten season alive.

Goucher was able to create a few more opportunities late, but the McDaniel defense led by senior Lucas Teshome closed down every passing lane continued to push forward. The Gophers managed one shot in the final 10 minutes of play as McDaniel held on for the 2-1 victory.

McDaniel returns to action on Saturday at Muhlenberg as conference play begins. The match will take place at 2 P.M.
