Nearhouse Earns First Career Win, 4-0 at Hood

FREDERICK, Md.  - A natural hat-trick by McDaniel College field hockey sophomore Tenley Pelot led the team to a 4-0 non-conference road victory over Hood to open the 2022 season on Thursday.

The Green Terror (1-0) have now won their last two season openers, outscoring their opponents, 13-0. A year ago, the team posted a 9-0 victory over Notre Dame (MD) at home on Sept. 2, 2021.

Thursday's win was also the first in the career of first-year head coach Kati Nearhouse. A 2015 graduate of Syracuse where she helped lead the Orange to the national championship game in 2014, she came to McDaniel after serving as the Director of Field Hockey Operations at Maryland in 2018.

Pelot scored all three of her goals in a span of just 4:53 over the third and fourth quarters. She netted her first with just 50 seconds remaining in the third before adding her second only 1:36 into the fourth. She then capped the scoring 2:27 later with her first career hat-trick.

Pelot finished with a career-high six points which equaled her production from 2021 when she had two goals and two assists.

Junior Yeseniah Ortiz totaled three points with one goal and one assist, netting the game-winner with 2:00 remaining in the second quarter. It was the third goal of her career after she totaled two goals and one assist for five points last season.

The Green Terror outshot the Blazers 21-3 while holding a 10-4 advantage in penalty corners. Junior Mikayla Smith played the entire 60 minutes in goal to earn her third career shutout.

McDaniel will makes its home debut on Saturday when it welcomes Randolph-Macon to Gill Stadium for a 5:30 p.m. start. Fans attending the game should be aware that the football team will be hosting Catholic beforehand with kickoff scheduled for 1 p.m.
