Contee, Truby Lead McDaniel to 60-55 Win in Season Opener

WESTMINSTER, Md. - McDaniel College men's basketball junior Charles Contee and senior Carter Truby combined for 32 points, 10 rebounds and six assists as the Green Terror opened the season with a 60-55 victory over Penn State Schuylkill Wednesday.

McDaniel (1-0) posted its first win in three meetings against the Nittany Lions while extending its win streak in home openers to four dating back to the 2018-19 season.

Contee finished with 17 points, one shy of his career high set in a 76-72 victory at Elizabethtown on Dec. 30, 2021. He scored 14 points in the second half while adding three rebounds, three assists and three steals. He was also 8-of-9 from the free throw line, including a perfect 7-of-7 in the second half.

Meanwhile, Truby totaled 15 points, seven rebounds and three assists.

McDaniel took its largest lead of the game, 47-39, on a layup by junior Jahdel Darego with 7:43 to play in the second half before a 16-7 run gave Schuylkill a 55-54 lead with 1:51 remaining. Contee scored the next four points, including two from the free throw line with 23 seconds left.

After the Nittany Lions (0-4) had two shots to tie in the final 12 seconds, junior David Smoot III secured the rebound on the second attempt before being fouled and hitting both free throw attempts to seal the win for the Green Terror.

McDaniel held a 39-31 advantage in rebounds with Darego and sophomore Russell Dandridge joining Truby with a team-high seven. The team totaled 18 second-chance points with 15 offensive rebounds.

In his first career game, freshman Jonas Sujeta had 11 points, six rebounds and three steals.

The Green Terror return to action this Saturday, November 12 when they host a non-conference contest versus Elizabethtown beginning at 7 p.m. following the conclusion of the Rebecca Martin Memorial Tip-Off Tournament hosted by the McDaniel women's basketball team.
