WESTMINSTER, Md. - In just his second collegiate game, McDaniel College men's basketball freshman
Jonas Sujeta totaled 24 points and 17 rebounds in a 72-59 victory over Elizabethtown Saturday night at the Gill Center.
The Green Terror (2-0) posted their third-straight win against the Blue Jays overall and third in-a-row at home.
Sujeta's first career double double marked the first time a McDaniel player totaled at least 20 points and 10 rebounds since Feb. 2, 2016 when Tim Stewart had 33 points and 17 rebounds at Dickinson.
Thanks to a 16-4 run, Elizabethtown (0-2) took its largest lead of the game, 30-18, with 7:24 remaining in the first half. However, led by eight points from Sujeta, the Green Terror scored the next 13 points to take a 31-30 advantage with 4:20 to play.
Sujeta had 13 first-half points to go along with eight rebounds as McDaniel led 35-32 at halftime. Senior
Carter Truby and junior
Joey Reiling each added eight points. Sujeta and Reiling were 8-of-10 from the floor, including 5-for-6 from three-point range.
The Blue Jays scored six of the first eight points to start the second half and regain the lead, 38-37 with 18:07 left, but that would be their last as Sujeta and junior
David Smoot III each scored five points as McDaniel used a 12-2 run to take a nine-point lead, 49-40.
Elizabethtown pulled within two with 8:09 to play before a quick 7-0 spurt pushed the Green Terror margin back to nine with 5:47 to play.
McDaniel went 8-for-8 from the free throw line in the final 1:10 to post its fourth win in the last six at home. The Green Terror were 16-of-23 from the line as a team.
Reiling finished with 14 points with 12 coming on four three-pointers as he was 4-for-5 from three-point range. Sujeta was also 4-for-5 from behind the arc and 10-of-15 from the floor.
Junior
Charles Contee had nine points and five assists while sophomore
Lorin Hall totaled two points, eight rebounds and four assists.
