WESTMINSTER, Md. - The rematch of the 2021 Centennial Conference Championship Game lived up to its billing with the Green Terror advancing to the semifinals on penalty kicks.
In a defensive first half, both teams traded shots early. Alison Francis created some space for the Diplomats and ripped a shot from outside the box, but Green Terror keeper
Katherine Carstensen was in position to made the save. McDaniel responded and began to push the ball into Diplomats territory.
Olivia Moskunas beat her defender and took a shot that was stopped by the Franklin & Marshall keeper.Â
As the half continued, both defenses dug in and made it difficult for either offense to gain momentum.
Jules Dotterweich and
Kiersten Crowley pressured the Diplomats forwards all over the field and held Franklin & Marshall to a pair of shots in the opening period. With eight minutes left in the half, Coach Lagana Bly brought in
Sydney Lewis off the bench to provide a spark for the Green Terror offense. Just after
Lewis entered the field of play, McDaniel was awarded a corner kick.
Allison Storm sent the ball into the box which bounced around and was deflected off
Elizabeth LeChard's leg at the top of the box. Lewis got possession of the ball, turned, and launched a beautiful strike past the keeper's outstretched arms to break the deadlock and tally her first collegiate goal.
The came out of the locker room for the second half with more intensity and controlled possession for the final 45 minutes of play.
Carstensen made two clutch saves, as the Diplomats continued to attack the McDaniel defense. For the majority of the half, McDaniel could not get anything going on offense and mustered only one shot that was saved by the Diplomats keeper.Â
In the 81st minute, Franklin & Marshall broke through and tied the game with a goal by Kate Boujoukos deep in the box. She was able to turn and place it in the left corner past the McDaniel keeper. With the score tied, and just under 10 minutes left of action, both teams frantically tried to create another scoring opportunity. In the 87th minute, McDaniel's chance came when
Jessica Weinoldt beat her defender and blasted a shot from 30 yards out. It dipped just below the crossbar, but the keeper got a piece of it and deflected it over the goal.Â
The score held and just like last years championship, extra time was needed to decide a winner.Â
In the first half of overtime, the Diplomats had two shots, but both were saved by
Carstensen. As both teams pushed forward, neither could find a rhythm on offense late in the second period of overtime, and as time expired both sides readied themselves for a penalty shootout.Â
As both teams stood at the midfield stripe for the shootout,
Weinoldt went up for McDaniel and connected for the first penalty of the afternoon. Emma Horan was up first for Franklin & Marshall. She converted hers as well. From there, McDaniel failed to convert the next two, but junior goal keeper
Grayson Jons came up with a save and the Diplomats put one off the post. With the score tied after the first five penalty attempts, McDaniel senior
Kiersten Crowley stepped up and ripped a shot past the keeper. Now, just needing a stop
Jons settled on the line and awaited the Diplomats shot. Missy Gates stepped up for Franklin & Marshall, she approached the ball and blasted it to the lower right corner, but
Jons anticipated the shot and made the game-winning save. The Green Terror advance to the semifinals of the Centennial Conference Championship.
The Green Terror will travel to Johns Hopkins on Friday to take on the Blue Jays in the semifinal. The match is scheduled to begin at 6 P.M.
