BALITMORE, Md. - The Green Terror battled the Blue Jays all night in a tightly contested semifinal, but could not overcome Johns Hopkins potent offense in a 3-0 loss.
As the match began, both teams battled for possession near the midfield stripe. Johns Hopkins found its rhythm first and started to attack the McDaniel defense.
Jules Dotterweich and
Kiersten Crowley anchored the defense and pressured the Blue Jays offense into several tough shots.
After three off-target shots, Rachel Jackson created some space and ripped a shot towards the lower right of the goal, but
Katherine Carstensen anticipated the shot and made the save. Less than a minute later Kacie Filian took a shot that was dipping just below the crossbar as
Carstensen reached up and made the save.
In the 32nd minute, Johns Hopkins was able to break the deadlock with a goal from Breukelen Woodard. McDaniel responded right after and attacked deep into Blue Jays territory where
Elizabeth LeChard launched a shot towards the goal, but the Hopkins keeper was able to make the stop. Johns Hopkins countered right after that attempt, and Woodard scored her second goal of the game.
Leading by two, Johns Hopkins kept attacking and had two more scoring opportunities that were saved by
Carstensen who finished with nine saves for the game. The Blue Jays led 2-0 heading into the break.
As the second half began, Hopkins kept pushing forward and attempted two more shots, but the Green Terror keeper came up big once again and kept McDaniel in the game. In the 59th minute, McDaniel started to control the possession and had chances with shots by
Samantha Rodrick and
Olivia Moskunas but neither found the back of the net. After another Johns Hopkins goal, McDaniel continued to attack. Freshman forward
Bayleigh Perdue beat her defender and took a shot that was saved by the Blue Jays keeper.Â
A few minutes later,
Jessica Weinoldt ripped a shot towards the center of the goal only to be stopped by Hopkins. In the final ten minutes, McDaniel continued to test the Johns Hopkins defense with three more shots, but could not capitalize. As time expired, the Blue Jays held on to win 3-0 and advance to the Centennial Conference Championship Game.Â
The Green Terror await the NCAA Selection Committee's decision to see if they receive an at-large bid into the 2022 NCAA Division III Tournament.Â
