Volleyball Falls to Stevenson, Rowan in Saturday Tri-Match

OWINGS MILLS, Md. - McDaniel College volleyball sophomores Allyson Burgee and Kathy Taveras led the Green Terror as they fell to host Stevenson and Rowan in a tri-match Saturday at Owings Mills Gymnasium.

McDaniel (1-13) began the day with a 25-17, 25-16, 25-17 setback against Stevenson before falling to Rowan, 25-17, 31-29, 25-21.

Burgee totaled 14 kills and four block assists while Taveras had 32 digs, seven assists and two service aces.

Stevenson 3, McDaniel 0 (25-17, 25-16, 25-17)

The Mustangs (19-2) led from start to finish in the first set, jumping out to a 4-0 lead. The Green Terror would pull within one on two separate occasions, but Stevenson scored four-straight points to take its largest lead, 21-14, en route to the eight-point victory.

The second set was back-and-forth at the start and featured three ties, the last of which came at 6-6. However, the Mustangs scored nine of the next 10 points to take a 15-7 advantage. A 4-1 run by McDaniel, including an ace by Taveras and a kill by junior Nia Roberts pulled the team within five, 18-13, but that was as close as the visitors would get.

The third set featured three ties and three lead changes. The Green Terror built an 8-5 lead before Stevenson scored six consecutive points to take a three-point advantage. Two kills by freshman Mackenzie Mitchell pulled McDaniel within two, but a 5-1 run by the Mustangs turned a 13-11 lead into an 18-12 advantage. The hosts sealed the match on three-straight kills by Rileigh Kimball.

Roberts finished with six kills and two block assists while freshman Jayda Patterson totaled five kills, five digs and two block assists. Junior Tatiana Hamilton had eight assists and 10 digs.

Rowan 3, McDaniel 0 (25-17, 31-29, 25-21)

Like the first set against Stevenson, the Profs (16-2) led from start to finish, taking advantage of 11 attack errors by the Green Terror. Rowan jumped out to a 10-2 lead before a kill by Burgee and an attack error by the Profs pulled McDaniel within four, 13-9. However, Rowan scored nine of the next 11 points to take a 22-11 advantage. Six of the Profs' points came off Green Terror errors.

The second set was back-and-forth as there were 13 ties and seven lead changes. With McDaniel in front 10-9, Rowan scored the next five points to take a four-point lead before stretching it to 20-15. Led by two kills from junior Abigail Cook and five errors by the Profs, the Green Terror scored eight unanswered points to retake the lead, 23-20. There were six more ties, the last of which came at 29-29 before Rowan scored the final two points on a McDaniel attack error and a kill by Courtney Rhoden.

The 31-29 margin was the most combined points in a set for the Green Terror since they fell in the second set to Eastern, 33-31, on Sept 4, 2021.

The third set was also tightly contested with six ties and three lead changes, the last of which came at 9-9 on a kill by Mitchell. The Profs scored the next five points, including three on McDaniel errors. Leading 21-19, Rowan scored four of the final six points with two coming on Green Terror service errors. Burgee totaled five of her 10 kills in the set while Mitchell added three.

Burgee finished with 10 kills, one shy of her season and career high. Roberts totaled seven kills and five block assists while Hamilton had 24 assists, four service aces and eight digs. Taveras had 20 digs, her fourth career match with at least 20.

McDaniel returns to action on Wednesday, Oct. 12 when it hosts John Hopkins inside the Gill Center beginning at 7 p.m.
