SWARTHMORE, Pa. - McDaniel College field hockey junior
Yeseniah Ortiz scored the game's first goal to put the Green Terror on top early, but Swarthmore scored three unanswered goals en route to a 3-1 victory Saturday at Clothier Field.
McDaniel (5-6, 1-4 CC) fell for just the fourth time in 11 road games against the Garnet since 2000.
Ortiz scored her third goal of the season only 6:53 into the first quarter to put the visitors on top off an assist from junior
Amanda Sponaugle. Ortiz found the back of the cage for the second-straight game and now has a point in three of the team's last four games. She is currently tied for the team lead in points with eight.
After scoring her first goal of the season on Wednesday in a 2-1 win at Dickinson, Sponaugle picked up her first assist, tying her career high for points in a season with three.
Despite being out-shot 7-4 over the first 15 minutes, the Green Terror maintained their one-goal lead until five minutes into the second when Martina Kampel scored the first of her two goals to tie the game at 1-1.
The game remained deadlocked at 1-1 deep into the third quarter when Quinn Basewitz scored off an assist from Deborah Kim with 5:17 remaining. Swarthmore out-shot McDaniel in the quarter, 7-0. The team also held a 6-0 advantage in penalty corners.
Kampel scored her second goal with 8:22 remaining in the fourth off Kim's second assist to provide the final margin.
The Garnet (8-3, 3-1 CC) held a 21-8 margin in shots and a 17-4 edge in penalty corners. Junior
Mikayla Smith made six saves, including four in the second half.
