WESTMINSTER, Md. - McDaniel College field hockey junior
Mikayla Smith made a career-high 16 saves as the Green Terror fell to No. 6 Johns Hopkins Wednesday night at Gill Stadium, 4-0.
Led by Smith, McDaniel (5-7, 1-5 CC) held the Blue Jays to their lowest goal total in the last five meetings dating back to Oct. 11, 2017.
Smith totaled six saves in the first quarter as she held Hopkins scoreless through the first 15 minutes despite facing 12 shots and six penalty corners.
The Blue Jays (10-3, 6-0 CC) broke through just over three minutes into the second as Grace Nockolds found the back of the cage for just the second time this season off an assist from Tessa Erickson.
Abby Birk scored the first of her two goals with 4:10 left in the quarter on a blast from the top of the circle of a feed from Anna Scott to give Hopkins a 2-0 halftime advantage.
The Green Terror had a chance to cut the lead in half with 2:29 to play, but a shot by junior
Olivia Vanreusel was saved by Phoebe Williams for one of her two stops on the night.
Smith totaled eight of her 16 saves in the opening half to keep McDaniel in the game, but the Blue Jays scored twice in a span of 2:58 to start the second half, doubling their lead on goals by Birk and Grace Waldeck.
However, Smith added seven more saves on 14 shots over the final 27 minutes, including four in the fourth quarter as the Green Terror held Hopkins scoreless.
Smith's previous career high in saves was 13 which she set at Haverford on Sept. 25, 2021 and matched earlier this year at No. 6 Salisbury on Sept. 17.
McDaniel had a second scoring opportunity early in the fourth off its lone penalty corner, but a redirect by sophomore
Emily Paulson inside the left post was denied by Williams to preserve the seventh consecutive shutout for the Blue Jays. Hopkins has yet to allow a goal in six Centennial Conference contests this season, outscoring opponents, 24-0.
The Green Terror return to action on Saturday when they travel to Bryn Mawr. Game time is at 1 p.m. The Owls are currently receiving votes in the latest National Field Hockey Coaches Association Division III Coaches Poll.
