Four Second Half Goals Carry Bryn Mawr Past Field Hockey

BRYN MAWR, Pa. - Bryn Mawr scored four unaswered goals in the second half en route to a 5-1 victory over the McDaniel College field hockey team on Saturday at Applebee Field.

The Green Terror (5-8, 1-6 CC) were out-shot 22-4, including 14-2 in a decisive second half.

The Owls scored the game's first goal just over five minutes into the game before McDaniel tied the game with under five minutes remaining in the first half when junior Amanda Sponaugle scored her second goal of the season with 3:40 left in the second quarter.

Bryn Mawr (11-2, 5-1 CC), who entered the game receiving votes in this week's National Field Hockey Coaches Association Division III Coaches Poll, struck quickly again to start the second half, scoring the game-winning goal just 1:53 into the third quarter when Novy Goetgeluk scored off a penalty corner.

Sophie Vagts scored six minutes later to increase the Owls' lead before Thekla Jubinville and Hazel Miller found the back of the cage in the fourth. Miller had a hand in four of the team's four goals, finishing the game with two goals and two assists. She leads the team with 31 points this season, totaling 12 goals and seven assists.

In six conference games, Bryn Mawr has scored 16 of its 25 goals in the second half.

Junior Mikayla Smith made 10 saves for the Green Terror, including nine in the second half. She has totaled 25 saves over her last two games and has had at least 10 saves four times this season.

Freshman Dillan Williams was also credited with one defensive save.

For McDaniel, the team's game at Goucher on Tuesday has been canceled due to the Gophers' need to make-up a Landmark Conference contest versus Scranton. As a result, the next game for the Green Terror will be at Ursinus on Saturday, Oct. 22. Game time is at noon.
