Sponaugle Scores Again in 4-1 Loss at Ursinus

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. - McDaniel College field hockey senior Amanda Sponaugle scored her third goal of the season as the Green Terror fell at Ursinus Saturday, 4-1.

McDaniel (5-10, 1-8 CC) used a strong third quarter that saw the team outshoot the Bears 10-8 and hold a 10-5 advantage in penalty corners, but the Green Terror could not overcome a three-goal deficit.

Ursinus scored a goal in each of the first two quarters while outshooting McDaniel 16-5 to take a 2-0 halftime lead. The Bears added to their lead with a third tally with just under five minutes remaining in the third quarter.

Sponaugle scored her third goal in the last five games with 1:12 to play off an assist from sophomore Emily Paulson. Sponaugle is now tied second on the team in goals this season with three while ranking third in points with seven. She entered the season with one goal and three points in 17 career games.

Sponaugle has scored three of the team's five goals over its last five games while assisting on another.

Ursinus (8-8, 5-4 CC) added a fourth-quarter goal off a penalty corner to cap the scoring on what would be the game's final shot with 6:28 remaining.

Junior Mikayla Smith totaled 11 saves, her third-straight game and fifth this season with at least 10, while Sponaugle added a defensive save, her fourth of the year and fifth of her career.

After two-straight road games, McDaniel concludes its season with back-to-back home games next week, beginning Wednesday, Oct. 26 against Gettysburg. Game time is at 4 p.m.
