Box Score CARLISLE, Pa. - McDaniel College field hockey senior
Amanda Sponaugle scored with just over six minutes left to give the Green Terror a 2-1 Centennial Conference victory over Dickinson Tuesday at Biddle Field Complex.
McDaniel (5-5, 1-3 CC) snapped a four-game losing streak with its first conference victory of the season. The team also stopped a four-game losing streak against the Red Devils and a four-game skid on the road in the series as the Green Terror posted their first win at Dickinson since Oct. 5, 2011.
Sponaugle scored her first goal of the season and the second of her career. Ironically, the defender's first career goal also came against the Red Devils a year ago on Oct. 6, 2021.
Sponaugle scored with 6:26 remaining in the fourth quarter off an assist from junior
Emma Legacy. On the team's fourth corner of the game, Legacy inserted a penalty corner from the left where Sponaugle stopped it, took a step inside the circle and blasted it past Dickinson goalie, Saige Stevens.
Legacy earned her second assist of the season and the fourth of her career.
The Red Devils (1-9, 0-4 CC) took an early 1-0 lead two minutes into the game when Becca Woods scored off an assist from Abby Marthins on a penalty corner.
McDaniel answered with just 58 seconds remaining in the first quarter as juniorÂ
Yeseniah Ortiz entered the circle from the left before beating her defender and slotting the ball low past Stevens to tie the game at 1-1.
Despite being outshot 5-0 in the second, the Green Terror kept the game tied thanks to four saves from junior
Mikayla Smith. After an uneventful third quarter that saw just one shot between the two teams, Dickinson turned up the pressure in the fourth, earning five penalty corners and taking four shots.
However, Smith added two more saves to her credit and McDaniel capitalized on one of its three shots and two penalty corners to post its first conference road win since a 1-0 victory at Bryn Mawr on Oct. 7, 2017.
The Green Terror look to make it two in-a-row on Saturday when they travel to Swarthmore for a 1 p.m. contest at Clothier Field Stadium. McDaniel defeated the Garnet a year ago, 1-0.
