Carstensen Records Four Saves in 1-0 Loss at Ursinus

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. - Ursinus scored early in the second half en route to a 1-0 victory over the McDaniel College women's soccer team Saturday at Patterson Field.

Ursinus (7-6-4, 3-5-2 CC) took control early in the first half against the Green Terror as Ciara Rago created space and ripped a shot in the first four minutes, but graduate student Katherine Carstensen was in perfect position to make the save.

Despite allowing eight shots, the McDaniel back line led by graduate student Jules Dotterweich and senior Kiersten Crowley was able to hold the Bears scoreless in the first half.

In the 31st minute, McDaniel (8-5-4, 5-3-2 CC) had its first scoring opportunity when Crowley took a shot that was saved by Kaela Frenchman. As the half continued, both teams traded scoring chances with Carstensen making two more saves.

Sophomore Samantha Rodrick had a chance in the 34th minute, but Frenchman made another stop. The scoreless tie held into halftime.

The Green Terror turned up the pressure to start the second half as graduate student Jessie Titus and sophomore Madyson Hill created opportunities in the first 10 minutes, but could not capitalize.

After a hand ball in the box in the 59th minutes, Ursinus was awarded a penalty kick which Morgan Raley converted to give the Bears a 1-0 lead.

As time became a factor, McDaniel continued to push forward and create scoring chances. Sophomore Jessica Weindolt had a header that went just wide and a few minutes later, sophomore Olivia Moskunas took a shot that was blocked in front by a defender.

In the 75th minute, junior Allison Storm took a shot that was saved by Frenchman.

Over the final 10 minutes of action, McDaniel sent a barrage of shots on net, but Frenchman was able to make three saves late to preserve the lead.

With under a minute to play, Weinoldt sent another header towards the goal, but Frenchman made the last of her nine saves and the Bears held on for the one-goal victory.

McDaniel returns to action in the first round of the 2022 Centennial Conference Women's Soccer Championship on Tuesday, Nov. 1 at a site and time to be announced later.
