WASHINGTON, D.C. - McDaniel battled back from two-sets down to take the third, but could not overcome the deficit in 3-1 defeat to Catholic.
The first set was a tightly contested match with both teams trading points early. McDaniel (2-15) sophomore
Allyson Burgee recorded a kill an ace in the early going. With McDaniel leading 8-7, Catholic (12-13) rattled off four straight points to take the lead. McDaniel responded with a five-point run of their own to jump back in front. The momentum swung back the other way with a pair of aces from Catholic, and the Cardinals were back in front. McDaniel stayed close, but could not close the gap and fell to Catholic 25-19.
To start off the second set
Tatiana Hamilton made an impact all over the court including an ace along with a pair of assists to
Allyson Burgee and
Angalyn Strouse. The Green Terror held a five-point lead early, but Catholic pulled close with three kills from Haile Murphy.
Nia Roberts connected on a kill to take a 12-9 lead, but Catholic rattled off five straight to regain the lead.Â
Both teams traded points with another kill by
Angalyn Strouse who led the team with 10 on the night.
Mackenzie Mitchell also recorded a kill and the score was tied at 15-all. With the Cardinals in control of the set,
Roberts added two more kills to keep pace, but Catholic pulled away to win 25-20.Â
The third set opened up with several errors by the Cardinals, and McDaniel took advantage with timely points of their own. With McDaniel leading 13-9, three different Green Terror players recorded kills including freshman
Kailey Young to stretch the lead out to 8 points. Catholic attempted to rally with a trio of kills and closed the gap to five, but McDaniel pushed through and won the third set 25-19.
The fourth set began with McDaniel opening up an 8-1 lead behind a pair of kills from
Mackenzie Mitchell. Catholic scored the next five to pull within two, and from there neither team was able to go ahead by more than three until the very end when took control and scored seven of the last eight points to win the set 25-19.Â
McDaniel returns to action this Friday at Ursinus. The match is scheduled to begin at 7 P.M.
