Heid continues stellar play with eight saves in draw

DELAWARE COUNTY, Pa. - In a tightly contested matchup McDaniel's defense came up with crucial stops on the road at Haverford in a scoreless draw.

To open up the game, McDaniel (8-2-3, 1-2-3 CC) went on the offensive. After a few early fouls by both teams, Carver Neary found an opening in the box and connected on a header that went just wide of the goal. Two minutes later Jake Kegley created space and took a shot that was blocked by a Fords (3-6-5, 1-3-2 CC) defender.

Haverford continued their aggressive play and was called for four of their 19 fouls within a two minute period. The Fords were able to attack the Green Terror defense and Haverford forward Andrew Fritz launched a shot in the 17th minute, but Austin Heid was in perfect position to make the save.

In the 26th minute McDaniel was awarded one of four corner kicks on the day. Gage Souder lined up the corner and sent it into the box. The ball rebounded back out and Souder took possession. He ripped a shot that was narrowly saved by the Fords goalkeeper.

Both defenses showed up to play, and made it hard for the offenses to find any sort of rhythm in the first half. McDaniel's defense led by Jared Edge and Tyler Reid pressured the Fords all over the field. They consistently broke up long passes and cutoff passing angles. McDaniel forward Justin Winborne-Freeman attempted a header late in the first half, but could not place it on target.

To start the second period, Tyler Reid beat his defender and took a shot, but was saved by the Fords keeper. The Fords responded and began to attack the Green Terror defense. During a 90-second stretch Austin Heid made three crucial saves to keep the clean sheet going. Haverford continued to press forward and ripped another barrage of shots at Heid who came up with another pair of saves.

McDaniel was able to regain control and in the last 15 minutes of action was able to create a number of scoring opportunities. Brandon Morse got a step on his defender and sent a shot just wide of the goal. AJ Nordone followed that up with a shot of his own, but was blocked by a Haverford defender. In the 84th minute Gage Souder took his third shot of the day, but it was blocked as well. The 0-0 score held and McDaniel tallied their 10th shutout of the season.

McDaniel returns to action on Wednesday at No. 22 Gettysburg. The match is scheduled to begin at 7 P.M.
