Ortiz nets late goal for field hockey on rainy night

THE SKINNY STORY
Shenandoah scored on either side of the first-quarter break to take a 2-0 lead before a 40-minute lightning delay and defeated McDaniel, 3-1.

THE LEADERS
Yeseniah Ortiz (Glassboro, N.J./Delsea Regional) scored in the final five minutes to lead the Green Terror.

FOR THE FOES
• Abby Barefoot stretched the lead to 2-0 just before lightning halted play with 11:18 to play in the second quarter for the Hornets.

THE REST OF THE STORY
• Cassidy Morrison finished just in front of the goal to stake Shenandoah to a 1-0 lead with 1:51 to play in the first quarter.
• Abby Barefoot then found the backboard from the right side just 3:42 into the second quarter in the midst of a driving rainstorm that eventually produced a lightning strike that pulled the teams off the field.
• Kelsey Jones found Farren Winter on the post off a corner in the 34th minute for a 3-0 advantage.
• Yeseniah Ortiz knocked a ball from off the endline just to the right of the cage and into the cage to get McDaniel on the board with 4:21 to play.

THE INSIDE STORY
• Shenandoah finished with an 11-2 advantage in shots and 14-3 advantage in penalty corners.

NEXT UP
McDaniel returns to action in the conference opener at Haverford on Saturday. Game time is 1 p.m.
