LaVecks wins Petrofes title at 165

THE SKINNY
McDaniel had seven wrestlers finish in the top eight of their respective weight classes to key a sixth-place finish at the annual Petrofes Invitational hosted by Messiah. The Green Terror finished with 125.5 points.

THE LEADERS
• Alex LaVeck (Reisterstown, Md./McDonogh) led the Green Terror with the individual title at 165, going 4-0 with three pins. His day started with a bye before recording a 27-second pin over Greensboro's Reginald Snowden. In the quarterfinals, LaVeck pinned Cortland's Steven Gazillo in 37 seconds to advance to Saturday and guarantee a placefinish. In the semifinal, LaVeck earned an injury default win before the third period before recording his third first-minute fall in the championship bout, topping Messiah's Zach Needles in 51 seconds.
Tony Wuest (Symrna, Del./Smyrna) finished second at heavyweight. After opening with a bye, Wuest recorded three straight pins. He topped King's Dave White in 37 seconds before downing Carter Urich (Messiah) in 1:20 to advance to the semifinals and Saturday's action. In the semifinals, he notched a 42-second fall over Chase Smith (Alvernia) before medically forfeiting the title bout to place second.
• Jaedyn Harris (Gaithersburg, Md./Gaithersburg) wrestled back to a fourth-place finish at 197, going 5-2 on the weekend. His day opened with a 3-minute, 30-second pin of Waynesburg's Luke Lavanway before recording a 14-1 victory over Cortland's Chris Bold. Harris dropped an 11-3 decision to eventual champion Gino Sita (Alderson Broaddus) in the quarterfinals to fall to the consolation bracket. In the wrestlebacks on Saturday, Harris recorded a pin in 1:40 of Messiah's Chris Cratsley and a 9-2 decision over Gettysburg's Brendan Loder. In the consolation semis, Harris topped Washington & Jefferson's Alex Donahue by fall late in the third period. Harris then feel to Dwayne Johnson (Alderson Broaddus) 6-5 in the third-place match.
Michael Bromley (My. Airy, Md./Linganore) finished fifth at 174. His weekend opened with two decisions around a fall on Friday. He notched a 4-0 win over Fletcher Goodman (Muhlenberg) to start the day before pinning Brailyn Lightner (Mount Union) in 2:17. In the quarterfinals, Bromley defeated Antrez Clagnon (Alderson Broaddus), 6-4. In Saturday's semifinals, Bromley fell 11-6 to Demitreus Henry (Cortland) then dropped an 8-1 decision to Ray Martin (Gettysburg) in the consolation semis. Bromley notched a 2-minute, 28-second pin of Greg Griffith (Alderson Broaddus) in the fifth-place bout.
• At 157, Xavier Howard (Sykesville, Md./Wheaton) started with back-to-back first-period pins before topping Seth Evans (Waynesburg), 5-3. In the quarterfinals, Howard fell to the consolation bracket after a Nick Barnhart (Messiah) pin late in the second period. Howard earned an injury default win before dropping an 11-2 major decision to Robert Lawler (Alvernia). In the seventh-place bout, Howard defeated Gettysburg's David Bancroft, 11-4.
Jeovannie Martinez (North Bethesda, Md./Bethesda-Chevy Chase) placed eighth at 149. His day opened with a 19-3 technical fall of Navon Locust (Thaddeus Stevens) before falling to Ike Bryner (Messiah, 17-4. Three straight wins in the consolation bracket, including a 45-second pin of Jon Cermeno (Gettysburg), put Martinez in position to place. He dropped a second match to Bryner before falling 8-4 to Gettysburg's Eric Mougalian in the seventh-place bout.
Deontae Frederick (Catonsville, Md./Catonsville) added a second placewinner at 165, finishing eighth. After a bye, Frederick dropped his first match 7-5 to Chris Anderson of Mount Union. In the consolation bracket, Frederick recorded back-to-back pins, winning in 4:49 and 2:24. He was pinned by Shan Trattner (Muhlenberg) in 4:09 to drop the seventh-place bout, where Steven Gazzillo (Cortland) also pinned Frederick in the second period.

FOR THE FOES
• Muhlenberg won the team title with 147.5 points, edging the host Falcons by 8.5 points at the 17-team invitational. The Mules had nine placewinners on the weekend.

THE REST OF THE STORY
Alex DuFour (Owings Mills, Md./Owings Mills) went 3-2 at 125. He fell 8-6 in his opening match to Greensboro's Daniel Porter before recording three straight pins in the consolation bracket – all in the first period – before Errick Gerback (Mount Union) ended DuFour's weekend with a pin in the third period.
William Riley Jr. (Stewartstown, Pa./Archbishop Curley) dropped his first match of the day 8-5 before winning three straight in the consolation bracket that included a pin midway through the third period. He also added a 5-2 decision and 18-3 technical fall before injury defaulting at the end of the first period of his final bout.
Yoann Olympio (Germantown, Md./Northwest) went 2-2 at 184. He fell to Spencer Clements (Messiah) in 2:49 to start the weekend before topping Scott Horry (Muhlenberg) 8-7 in overtime and pinning Alvernia's Brian Czaus in 3:26. His weekend ended with a 6-3 loss to Nick Kostyak (Penn State-Mont Alto).
Cole Jones (Bel Air, Md./John Carroll) recorded one win in the consolation bracket at 133, earning a 1-minute, 30-second fall of Washington & Jefferson's Quivon Lester.
Ty Jefferson (Bowie, Md./St. Mary's Ryken) and Joe McKneely (Gaithersburg, Md./Damascus) each won once at 141. Jefferson recorded a 4-minute, 27-second fall in the first round of the consolation bracket. McKneeley's win came in his first match of the day, recording a 54-second pin.
• After a bye in the first round at 157, Jake Doyle (Cockeysville, Md./Hereford) recorded a 1-0 win over Rocco Pontino (Penn State-Mont Alto) for his lone win of the day.
• Thomas Chenoweth (Manchester, Md./Manchester Valley) notched his first collegiate pin in the consolation bracket at 165, pinning Tristan Reyes-Villa (Greensboro) in 3:54.
Valentino Pryor (Odenton, Md./Arundel) added a 4-3 win in the consolation bracket at 184.
• Eric Ward Jr. (Salisbury, Md./J.M. Bennett) also picked up a win at heavyweight, winning 11-5 in the consolation bracket.
