Norwitz claims conference title in playoff

ABBOTTSTOWN, Pa. – Brian Norwitz (Germantown, Md./Northwest) needed holes 55, 56 and 57 but ultimately prevailed as the 2016 Centennial Conference (CC) individual champion, leading McDaniel to a third-place finish at the men's golf championship on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

Norwitz joined Franklin & Marshall's Dan Furman and Steve Colodny, Gettysburg's Danny Harcourt and Swarthmore's Vamsi Darerla with a three-round score of 227 and all moved onto a sudden death playoff for the individual crown.

Damerla, Colodny and Norwtiz all fired even-par 4 on hole No. 1 while Harcourt and Furman posted a bogey 5 to make it a three-man race going to the second hole.

Norwitz had a chance to win it on the second hole with a 15-foot birdie putt but just missed the hole to match Darmerla and Colodny with another par and send the playoff to hole No. 3.

With 104 yards on his approach shot, Norwitz stuck his second shot to within six inches for a tap-in birdie and the Green Terror's 10th CC individual championship.

Norwitz was one shot off the lead in day one with a 74 before carding a 78 on Saturday and 75 on Sunday.

As a team, McDaniel posted a three-day score of 915, firing a 304 on Friday, a 309 on Saturday and 302 on Sunday. Franklin & Marshall, which had a three-shot lead on the Green Terror and Garnet entering the final round, staved off a McDaniel charge with four birdies among its five golfers in the final three holes to win its eighth title and third straight with a score of 910 (303-307-300). Gettysburg finished second after a round of 293 on Sunday, finishing with a 914 for the 54 holes.

Brandon Vance (Worcester, Pa./Methacton) and Mason Woolford (Pasadena, Md./Severna Park) finished as part of tie for sixth place with rounds of 230. Vance carded a round of 76 on Friday and team-best round of 74 on Sunday. Woolford matched Vance on Sunday and added a round of 76 on Saturday.

Tim LaSarso Jr. (Queensbury, N.Y./Queensbury) finished 16th overall with a score of 234 that included carding a round of 74 on Friday.

Steven Tanen (Laurel Hallow, N.Y./Cold Spring Harbor) rounded out the Green Terror competitors with a score of 237 (82-76-79) to place 20th.
