Relay grabs bronze

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – The 4x800-meter relay set a program record and earned a bronze medal to lead McDaniel at the 2016 Centennial Conference (CC) indoor track and field championship hosted by Ursinus on Saturday and Sunday.

As a team, the Green Terror scored 19 points to finish ninth. Johns Hopkins won the team title with 195 points, edging Haverford by 11 points.

Alex Panagakos (Hampstead, Md./North Carroll), Jim Heilman (Lutherville, Md./Baltimore Lutheran), Chris Jones (Centreville, Va./Centreville) and Thomas Runner (Elkridge, Md./St. Vincent Pallotti) joined forces to take their best mark and program record in the 4x800 down another two seconds. The quartet remained in position for a medal through the entire race, eventually grabbing the bronze with the time of 8:02.51.

Jones, Panagakos and Heilman joined Colin LaPenta (Morristown, N.J./Morristown) earlier in the meet to turn in a second ECAC-qualifying time, finishing fourth in the distance medley relay with a time of 10:35.82. It was a second off the program record.

Bill Emerson (Germantown, Md./Watkins Mills) recorded the best individual performance of the day, finishing fourth in the shot put with a  mark of 13.56 meters. His throw ranks fourth on the program's all-time list.

Gavin Gibson finished 11th in the 800 with a time of 2:00.93, ranking fifth in program history.

Daniel Johnson (Westminster, Md./South Doyle) just missed scoring in the pole vault, clearing 3.65 meters to finish ninth on jumps.

The relays will compete at the ECAC championship on Friday and Saturday at Ocean Breeze Park in Staten Island, N.Y.
