Herbert records 78 yards receiving in Homecoming win

Box Score

WESTMINSTER, Md. – McDaniel found the end zone midway through the fourth quarter to top Dickinson 14-7 in a defensive battle in Centennial Conference (CC) football action on Saturday.

Breon Herbert (Silver Spring, Md./Blake) hauled in four passes for the Green Terror (2-5, 2-4 CC) but none bigger than final one – a 58-yard touchdown grab that broke a 7-all tie.

Claude Richardson (Silver Spring, Md./Montgomery Blair) led the defense with 10 tackles, including three for loss.

Pat Irwin led the Red Devils (0-7, 0-6 CC) with 16 tackles – one of four player to reach double-digit stops. Jimmy Turner added 14 while Ned Emala and Tyler Heisey had 12 and 10, respectively.

After an exchange of turnovers midway through the opening quarter, McDaniel took over at the Dickinson 35. Matt Quattrone's (Carlisle, Pa./Carlisle Area) recovery of a botched handoff gave his offense a short field.

Will Koester (Purcellville, Va./Woodgrove) hit Andre Henry Jr. (Frederick, Md./Urbana) on the first play for a six-yard gain before John Chamberlin (Williamstown, N.J./Williamstown) ran for 14 yards.

Back-to-back Koester-to-Bamasa Bailor (Carlisle, Pa./Carlisle Area) 10-yard connection resulted in a touchdown a 7-0 lead with 4:14 to play.

From there – with the exception of the end of the first half – 13 straight drives ended in punts.

On the 14th consecutive punt, Jimmy Turner blocked the punt and Sam Peck recovered, setting up the Red Devils with a first down at the McDaniel 18.

Jordan Hollander took the end-around handoff and passed out it for the first time on the day, finding a wide-open Kyle Donahue for an 18-yard touchdown on the first play of the series. The extra-point tied the game at 7-all with 13:24 to play in the game.

The Green Terror took over at its own 20 with 8:10 to play. Facing a third-and-7, Koester found Bailor for an 11-yard gain before Perry Stefanelli (Rockville, Md./Good Counsel) ripped off an eight-yard run.

Two plays later, Koester found Herbert in stride and the junior – with the aide of a big Billy Adkins III (Delmar, Md./Delmar) block downfield – took it to the house to give the hosts the lead once again with 6:16 to play.

Dickinson drive to the Green Terror 32 on the ensuing possession but Quattrone knocked the ball out in the backfield and Duane Lucas Jr. (Gwynn Oaks, Md./Western Tech) recovered with 2:31 to play.

Seven Chamberlin power runs allowed the offense to run out the clock and secure McDaniel's second straight home victory.

Chamberlin finished with 92 yards rushing on 22 carries. Koester went 16-for-28 through the air for 168 yards. Bailor finished with 68 yards receiving on six catches.

Drew Scott (Brick, N.J./Brick Twp.) finished with eight tackles and 1.5 sacks while Andy Ullmann (Toms River, N.J./Monsignor Donovan) finished with a pair of sacks among his six stops. Quattrone had six tackles, the forced fumble and fumble recovery.

The seven points was the fewest allowed by McDaniel since a 35-0 win over Susquehanna on Oct. 9, 2010.

The Green Terror returns to action at Juniata on Saturday. Game time is 1 p.m.
