Defense, First Half Lead Muhlenberg Past McDaniel, 49-7

ALLENTOWN, Pa. - Sophomore David Smith recorded his Centennial Conference-leading fourth interception, but Muhlenberg used a big first half to post a 49-7 win over the McDaniel College football team on Saturday at Scotty Wood Stadium.

The Green Terror (1-5 , 0-3) were hampered by three turnovers, seven penalties, and a safety as the Mules scored 42 first-half points.

Muhlenberg (4-2 , 2-1 CC) scored on seven of its first eight possessions with five touchdowns and two field goals. They also added a safety following a bad snap on a punt by McDaniel on 4th-and-10 at its own 26-yard line with 1:57 remaining in the second quarter.

Smith's interception came on the Mules' third possession of the game, stopping their drive in the red zone midway through the first quarter.

Meanwhile, the Muhlenberg defense held the visitors to just 15 yards of total offense, totaling nine tackles for loss, including two sacks.

The Green Terror had turnovers on three of their first four possessions as well as a failed fake punt attempt on their opening drive of the game at their own 22-yard line.

McDaniel held the Mules to 164 yards and one score in the second half and the defense accounted for the team's lone score as senior Chris Wilson came up with the team's second interception and returned it 36 yards for a touchdown with 4:40 remaining in the game.

Meanwhile, the offense drove down inside Muhlenberg territory on two of its three second-half drives. The visitors opened the half with a 9-play drive that used over four minutes and reached the Mules' 35-yard line before their final drive of the game went for 43 yards on 11 plays and used almost seven minutes before stalling at the Muhlenberg 29-yard line.

Junior Taevon LeGrande led the defense with nine tackles while junior Bryce Allen had seven tackles, including one for loss and a pass breakup.

McDaniel travels to Dickinson next Saturday, Oct. 24 for a 2 p.m. kickoff at Biddle Field.
