MENDON, N.Y. – Freshman Brandon Vance (Worcester, Pa./Methacton) won his first collegiate tournament in his debut for McDaniel, leading the squad to a fifth-place finish at the St. John Fisher Collegiate Invitational in men's golf action on Saturday and Sunday.
As a team, the Green Terror posted a score of 608 over the two days, including shooting the second-best round of the tournament on Sunday with a score of 299. Washington & Jefferson won the 11-team event with a 36-hole score of 601 that included a round of 296 on Sunday.
Vance, who entered Sunday's play trailing the leader by two shots after a round of 74, posted a round of 73 over the second 18 to finish with a score of 147 and edge four other players by one stroke for the individual crown at Mendon Golf Club, which will host the 2016 NCAA Division III championship.
Cody Mewhirter (Hampstead, Md./North Carroll) finished tied for 15th with a score of 152, firing a 78 on Saturday before finishing the weekend with a round of 74.
Steven Tanen (Laurel Hollow, N.Y./Cold Spring Harbor) carded a two-round score of 153 to finish tied for 20th. After a round of 80 to open the tournament, Tanen matched Vance with a round of 73 on Sunday.
Mason Woolford (Pasadena, Md.) finished 26th overall with a score of 156 (77-79) while Brian Norwitz (Germantown, Md./Northwest) was 43rd overall with a score of 163 (81-82).
Andrew Gordon (Fairfax, Va./Fairfax), playing as an individual, matched Norwitz final score, following up his Saturday round of 78 with a round of 85 on Sunday.
The Green Terror returns to action at the Tom Kinder Memorial hosted by Bridgewater on Saturday and Sunday.
