Lillie finishes sixth

ABBOTTSTOWN, Pa. – James Lillie (Garret Park, Md./Walter Johnson) posted a two-round score of 153 to finish sixth overall and lead McDaniel to a third-place finish at its own spring invitational in men's golf action on Saturday and Sunday.

The Green Terror bounced back with a round of 306 on Sunday after sitting sixth with a first-round score of 314. In rainy conditions on Sunday, the squad was one of just five teams at the 13-team invitational to improve its score from Saturday to Sunday, finishing with a 620 for the 36 holes and the best score among the Centennial Conference teams in the field.

St. John Fisher overcame a one-shot deficit on day one to win the title with a 608 (303-305). New York University was second with a 616 (302-314).

Lillie carded a 77 on Saturday and 76 on Sunday to finish tied for sixth, outdueling his teammate Cody Mewhirter (Hampstead, Md./North Carroll) by one shot. Mewhirter matched Lillie with a 76 on Sunday but posted a round of 78 on Saturday to finish with a score of 154 and tied for eighth.

Alex Kane (Danvers, Mass./Masconomet Regional) was the only other McDaniel golfer to finish with two rounds in the 70s. Kane posted a 77 on Saturday before carding a 79 in the second round to finish with a 156 and tied for 14th.

Alex Matos (Rockville Centre, N.Y./South Side) turned in the lowest Green Terror round for the tournament, registering a 75 on Sunday after posting an 83 in the first round. He finished with a 158 to place 20th.

Steven Tanen (Laurel Hallow, N.Y./Cold Spring Harbor) rounded out the five playing as part of the team with a score of 172 (82-90) to finish 53rd.

Logan Connaughton (Matawan, N.J./Matawan Regional) posted a score of 163 as an individual, scoring a 78 on Saturday and 85 on Sunday.

Kyle Chittim (Annapolis, Md./Broadneck) and Tim LaSarso Jr. (Queensbury, N.Y./Queensbury) rounded out a trio of McDaniel individual players. Chittim posted a score of 169 (86-83) while LaSarso carded a 36-hole total of 171 (79-92).

The Green Terror returns to action at The Hershey Cup at Hershey Country Club on Sunday and Monday. Tee time is 9 a.m. both days.
