FAIRFAX, Va. – For the second week in a row, Carlos Hernandez (Derwood, Md./Magruder) improved his personal-best mark in the shot put, leading McDaniel at the Patriot Games hosted by George Mason in men's indoor track and field action on Saturday.
Hernandez improved his previous best by nearly 3 feet, 4 inches with a toss of 14.17 meters to finish fifth in the event and lead the Green Terror at the non-scoring meet. The throw moved him into third place on the program's all-time list.
Steve Wetherhold (Catasauqua, Pa./Catasauqua) finished 12th in the same event (12.16 meters) while Chuck Kronmiller (Norristown, Pa./Methacton) was 14th (11.85) to round out the trio of Centennial Conference-qualifying marks attained.
Chris Jones (Centreville, Va./Centreville), Colin LaPenta (Morristown, N.J./Morristown), Peter Merkel (Ellicott City, Md./Homeschool) and Ben Munyan (Middletown, Md./St. John's Catholic Prep) joined to win the 4x800-meter relay with a time of 8:45.00.
Jones was also 14th in the 800 with a conference-qualifying time of 2:02.87.
Merkel was 23rd in the 3,000 with a time of 9:25.13 while Munyan was 30th in the 400 with a time of 58.19 seconds.
Gary Smith finished eighth in the 60 hurdles with a time of 9.93 seconds to move into fourth place on the all-time list. He was also 28th in the 200 with a time of 24.89 seconds.
Joe Rollins (Temple Hills, Md./Surrattsville) finished 10th in the 60 with a time of 7.29 seconds.
Calvin Ball (Westminster, Md./Westminster) rounded out the McDaniel competitors with a 48th-place showing in the mile, crossing in a time of 5:04.44.
The Green Terror returns to action at the Hagerstown Invitational on Friday, Feb. 8.
