SELINSGROVE, Pa. – Carlos Hernandez (Derwood, Md./Magruder) recorded a pair of top-10 performances, including a program record in the weight throw to lead McDaniel at the Orange and Maroon Classic hosted by Susquehanna in men's indoor track and field action on Friday.
Hernandez finished eighth in both the weight throw and shot put to lead the Green Terror at the non-scoring meet. His throw of 12.87 meters bettered his own program record by more than three feet. In the shot put, he threw a personal-best distance of 13.16 meters, bettering his previous best by nearly a foot and moving into seventh place on the program's all-time list.
His toss in the shot put was one of 10 Centennial Conference (CC)-qualifying marks attained at the meet, including four in the shot put alone.
Steve Wetherhold (Catasauqua, Pa./Catasauqua) finished 13th in the event (12.78 meters) while Chuck Kronmiller (Norristown, Pa./Methacton) was 19th (12.19) and Kyle Dunn (Crofton, Md./South River) was 25th (11.87).
Joe Rollins (Temple Hills, Md./Surrattsville) debuted with a seventh-place finish in the 60 meters, missing the finals by 0.01 seconds but hitting the CC mark with a time of 7.27 seconds.
Gary Smith finished tied for fourth in the high jump, clearing 1.72 meters and was 18th in the 60 hurdles with a time of 10.37 seconds. Both were conference-qualifying marks and both also made the all-time top-10 list. The hurdles mark ranks fifth while the high jump mark is sixth. Smith also hit the CC mark int eh 200, finishing 14th in a time of 24.54 seconds.
Chris Jones (Centreville, Va./Centreville) rounded out the top-10 performers. He was ninth in the mile with a time of 4:35.18, which ranks sixth in program history.
Peter Merkel (Ellicott City, Md./Homeschool) was the final in the contingent of CC qualifiers, finishing 22nd in the mile with a time of 4:46.09.
The Green Terror returns to action at the Patriot Games hosted by George Mason on Saturday, Jan. 26.
