BELLE VERNON, Pa. – Cody Mewhirter (Hampstead, Md./North Carroll) fired a three-round score of 219 to lead McDaniel to a 14th-place finish at the Vulcan Invitational hosted by California (Pa.) in men's golf action on Saturday and Sunday.
At the two-day, 54-hole tournament of mostly Division II programs, the Green Terror combined for two sub-300 rounds on Saturday. McDaniel fired a round of 296 in the morning round before following that up with a score of 297 in the afternoon 18 on Cedarbrook's Red Course.
Playing the longer Gold Course on Sunday, the Green Terror posted a score of 317 to finish with a score of 910. Indiana (Pa.) won the 16-team tournament with a score of 862 (284-279-299).
Mewhirter finished day one with a score of 141, one under on the par-71 course. He carded a 70 in the opening round before finishing the day with an even-par 71. He posted a round of 78 on a par-72 course that is 557 yards longer.
James Lillie (Garret Park, Md./Walter Johnson) posted a 54-hole score of 228 that included a low round of 74 in round two. He posted the team's best score on the Gold Course with a 76 on Sunday. He opened the tournament with a round of 78.
Alex Kane (Denvers, Mass./Masconomet Regional) finished with a total of 230, firing round of 74 and 75 on Saturday for a 149 before posting an 81 on Sunday.
Steven Tanen (Laurel Hallow, N.Y./Cold Spring Harbor) registered a score of 236 behind an opening-round score of 74. He added a 77 in Saturday's afternoon round.
Kyle Chittim (Annapolis, Md./Broadneck) finished with a total of 242 (78-82-82) to round out the McDaniel competitors.
The Green Terror returns to action at its own Mason-Dixon Collegiate Classic at The Bridges Golf Club on Saturday and Sunday. Tee time is 8:30 a.m. both days.
