Messersmith scores twice

WESTMINSTER, Md. – McDaniel scored just 1:11 into the game, keying a 3-1 victory over Roanoke in non-conference field hockey action on Saturday.

Paige Messersmith (Phoenix, Md./Dulaney) scored two goals in the game's first eight minutes to lead the Green Terror (1-1), who finished with a 25-5 advantage in shots and 14-4 advantage in penalty corners.

Darian Shuker made 11 saves in goal for the Maroons (0-1), who cut the deficit in half early in the second half.

Off McDaniel's first penalty corner of the game, Messersmtih blasted home a Katie Corson (Ocean View, N.J./Ocean City) insert for a 1-0 lead.

Just 6:13 later, Messersmith cleaned up a loose ball in the middle of the circle, knocking it home for a 2-0 lead.

Off a corner in the 45th minute, Marceline Piek crossed a ball in front of the cage, where Kelly Finn tapped it in to trim the deficit to 2-1.

Sara Reynolds (York, Pa./Central York) converted a penalty stroke with 9:18 to play to set the final margin.

The Green Terror returns to action against William Paterson at Mary Washington on Saturday. Game time is 11 a.m.
