Butler, Nichols take bronze

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – Jake Nichols (Frederick, Md./Gov. Thomas Johnson) took bronze in the 60-meter hurdles to lead McDaniel at the 2012 Centennial Conference men's indoor track and field championship hosted by Ursinus on Saturday.

The Green Terror recorded 21 points to finish ninth. Haverford won its 18th team title with 161 points, bettering second-place Johns Hopkins by 29 points.

In addition to Nichols' third-place finish in the hurdles, Woody Butler (Smithsburg, Md./Middletown) added a second bronze medal for McDaniel, clearing 1.80 meters to finish third in the high jump.

Nichols was fourth in the preliminaries of the 60 hurdles with a time of 9.11 seconds before running a time of 8.93 seconds to move into second place on the Green Terror's all-time list.

Nichols also tied for fifth in the pole vault, clearing 3.65 meters. He was also 24th in the shot put with a toss of 10.98 meters.

Jordan Birden (Baltimore, Md./Cristo Rey Jesuit) tied for fourth in the high jump, clearing 1.75 meters. He was also 10th in the triple jump (11.79 meters), 25th in the long jump (5.36 meters) and 30th in the 60 meters (7.87 seconds).

Trevor Crest (Baltimore, Md./Episcopal), Brad Heavner (Frederick, Md./Urbana), Arthur Williams (Baltimore, Md./Cristo Rey Jesuit) and James Ways (Westminster, Md./Winters Mill) combined to finish eighth in the 4x200-meter relay with a time of 1:36.40, which is 10th all-time.

The distance medley relay of Ron Shriver (Westminster, Md./Francis Scott Key), Crest, Caleb Phillips (Frederick, Md./Gov. Thomas Johnson) and Peter Merkel (Ellicott City, Md./Homeschool) just missed scoring, finishing ninth with a time of 11:13.25.

Steve Wetherhold (Catasauqua, Pa./Catasauqua) also just missed scoring for McDaniel, placing ninth in the shot put with a throw of 12.92 meters.

Williams added a 12th-place showing the long jump (11.41 meters) and a 15th-place finish in the 60 (7.49 seconds). He was also 26th in the long jump (5.32 meters).

Phillips added a 14th-place showing in the 800 (2:08.34) while Heavner was 23rd in the 200 (24.58).

Kyle Dunn (Crofton, Md./South River) was 14th in the triple jump (11.04 meters), 22nd in the long jump (5.40 meters) and 28th in the 60 (7.70 seconds).

Diego Weiner (Miami, Fla./Riverside Military Academy [Ga.]), Nate Bell (Taneytown, Md./Francis Scott Key), Chuck Kronmiller (Norristown, Pa./Methacton) and Carlos Hernandez (Derwood, Md./Magruder) rounded out a group of six entrants in the shot put.

Weiner was 14th (11.91) while Bell placed 16th (11.71). Kronmiller finished 18th (11.47) while Hernandez came in 21st (11.39).

The Green Terror opens the outdoor season at the Colonial Invitational hosted by William & Mary on Mar. 16-17.
