Box Score CHESTERTOWN, Md. – Paige Messersmith (Phoenix, Md./Dulaney) completed the regular season of her final collegiate season with a natural hat trick to overcome a 2-0 deficit and lift McDaniel to a 3-2 Centennial Conference (CC) field hockey victory over Washington (Md.) on Saturday.
The Shorewomen (9-9, 5-5 CC) built a 2-0 lead in the game's first 6:17 before Messersmith drew the visitors even before halftime and netted the only second-half go to give the Green Terror (9-8, 4-6 CC) an overall record above .500 and make the team eligible for the ECAC tournament. McDaniel will have to wait until the field is announced on Nov. 5 to see if it will earn a second straight bid.
On a corner in the 23rd minute, Katie Corson (Ocean View, N.J./Ocean City) hit Messersmith, who blasted home her 14th goal of the season.
The assist gave Corson 10 on the year and matched Kim Camponelli's single-season program record from 2002.
With 3:04 to play in the first half, Messersmith scored on a breakaway before tallying on a running blast in the 58th minute.
Her 16 goals and 40 points are now both single-season program records
Hilary Kane staked Washington to a 1-0 lead just 3:25 into the game on a high shot off a corner.
Fewer than three minutes, Kate Duggan redirected a Gabby Tarbert shot to double the advantage.
Vicci Alexander (Annapolis, Md./Archbishop Spalding) finished with five saves for the Green Terror, who finished with a slim 14-13 edge in shots.
