Box Score Defense takes over in second half
WESTMINSTER, Md. – Catholic scored four first-half goals around a 62-minute lightning delay en route to a 5-0 victory over McDaniel in non-conference field hockey action on Tuesday.
Stephanie Thomson (Glen Burnie, Md./Chesapeake) registered six saves for the Green Terror (6-2), who limited the 13th-ranked Cardinals (7-1) to just three second-half shots after a 15-2 barrage in the first 35 minutes.
Colleen Harwood and Katie Bertrand each scored twice to lead Catholic.
Harwood found the back of the cage off a scramble in the game's eighth minute for a 1-0 lead.
That's where the game remained until lightning spotted in the distance with 14:29 elapsed in the contest halted play for the next hour.
Just 2 minutes, 7 seconds after the game resumed, Kim Hermann hit Harwood at the top of the arc on a corner and Harwood fired it home for a 2-0 lead.
Bertrand knocked home a third marker from right in front of the cage nearly five minutes later before Hermann played a corner short to Rebecca Lukaszczyk, who sent it back to Hermann for a 4-0 lead in the 25th minute.
McDaniel held a slight edge in the carry of second-half play but the lone goal of the stanza game when Bertrand knocked in a scramble on the far post in the 66th minute.
Katie Jones (Westminster, Md./Winters Mill) had a defensive save and shot for the Green Terror.
Katie Corson (Ocean View, N.J./Ocean City) had two of her team's six shots.
McDaniel returns to action at home against No. 7 Ursinus on Saturday. Game time is 5:30 p.m.
