Green Terror edges Franklin & Marshall by one stroke for
closest win
HAMPSTEAD, Md. – Jennie Weiner (Setauket,
N.Y./Ward Melville) finished with a two-day score of 175
to finish third overall and lead McDaniel to its seventh Centennial
Conference (CC) women's golf championship, hosted by Piney
Branch Golf Club on Saturday and Sunday.
The Green Terror overcame a two-stroke deficit to Franklin &
Marshall after Saturday's first round with a second-round
score of 355 to post a 723 and defeat the Diplomats by one
stroke.
Franklin & Marshall led after round one with a 366 to
McDaniel's 368 but notched its highest place finish since
2002 with a 358 on Sunday. It was the closest conference
championship in the 10-year history of the event, surpassing last
year's nine-shot victory by the Green Terror.
The Diplomats did claim the individual medalist honors with
freshman Meghan Maloney's two-round score of
166 behind a tournament-low round of 80 on Sunday – the
lowest round turned in by any CC golfer this season and
second-lowest final-round score posted in the championship.
Grace Gallagher finished second with a
two-round total of 169 before McDaniel took the next three places
overall, rounding out the all-conference honorees.
Weiner carded an 87 on Saturday and an 88 on Sunday to lead the
Green Terror to its lowest championship-round team total since a
354 in 2004's final round.
Morgan Koopman (Finksburg, Md./McDonogh) posted
matching rounds of 88 to finish fourth overall with a 176 while
Nicole Cristy (Towson, Md./Bryn Mawr) posted an 87
on Sunday after a first-round 92 to finish with a 179 and in fifth
place overall.
Anna Bencriscutto (Oro Valley, Ariz./Ironwood
Ridge) shot a 203 (101-102) for the tournament while
Val Saucier (Cockeysville, Md./Dulaney) turned in
a round of 92 on Sunday after having her score disqualified on
Saturday.
