Green Terror fires 627 to finish 10th at Navy
ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Paul Kovalcheck (Fairless Hills,
Pa./Truman) and Greg Bowman (Catonsville,
Md./Catonsville) each fired a two-day score of 155 to lead
McDaniel to a 10th-place finish at the Navy Spring Invitational in
men's golf action on Saturday and Sunday.
Playing as the only Division III team on the par-71 United
States Naval Academy course, the Green Terror battled cool and
windy conditions both days to combine for a 36-hole score of 627,
improving on Saturday's round of 318 by nine shots and
carding a 309 on Sunday – tied for seventh-best round of any
of the 21 competing teams in the second round to vault the team
from a tie for 13th into the top 10.
Navy won its tournament with a two-day score of 592 that
included a 286 on Saturday. Bucknell was second with a 596 behind
Sunday's low round of 292.
In the team's final tune-up before next weekend's
54-hole Centennial Conference (CC) championship, Bowman carded
McDaniel's low round of the tournament on Sunday with a 76
after posting a 79 in the first round to finish tied for 36th
overall.
Kovalcheck joined Bowman in that seven-way tie behind a 77 on
Sunday and a 78 on Saturday.
Bryan Johnson (Hampstead, Md./North Carroll)
finished with a two-round score of 159, carding a 79 in the first
round and an 80 in the second round.
KJ Mazurek (Rumson, N.J./Rumson-Fair Haven)
finished with a two-day score of 161, bettering his Saturday round
of 82 by three strokes on Sunday to post a 79.
Alex Campbell (Howell, N.J./Wall) improved
eight shots from the first to second round to finish with a 162
(85-77).
The Green Terror, in search of its sixth CC title, and the six
other conference teams are slated to play 27 holes on both Saturday
and Sunday next weekend for the championship and automatic berth to
the NCAA Championship. Action begins at 9 a.m. on both days.
