Mules tally three minutes apart to down McDaniel

WESTMINSTER, Md. – Dayna Hovern recorded both Muhlenberg goals, leading her team to a 2-1 Centennial Conference (CC) field hockey victory over McDaniel on Saturday.

Paige Messersmith (Phoenix, Md./Dulaney) staked the Green Terror (3-7, 1-3 CC) to a 1-0 lead but the Mules (1-9, 1-3 CC) countered with a pair of goals to notch their first win of the season.

Messersmith dribbled in and fired a shot from the left wing for a 1-0 lead just 8:05 into the game.

At the 15:51 mark, Hovern knocked home a scramble in front of the cage to even the game before scoring off her own rebound 2:49 later for a 2-1 lead after Muhlenberg had tallied just twice in its first nine contests.

McDaniel had second-half opportunities, outshooting the Mules 12-0 in the half and 18-3 for the game but could not find the backboard. The Green Terror also had a 21-5 advantage in penalty corners, including 13-3 in the second half.

Kristen Dornenberg made seven saves for Muhlenberg.

McDaniel returns to action at home against Dickinson on Wednesday. Game time is 7 p.m.
