Green Terror tally two in each half for 4-2 win over Virginia Wesleyan

WESTMINSTER, Md. - Four different McDaniel players scored, including goals from Hope Battista (Crofton, Md./South River) and Kaitlin Boerman (Pasadena, Md./Chesapeake) 37 seconds apart in the second half, to lift the squad to a 4-2 win over Virginia Wesleyan in non-conference field hockey action on Monday.

The Green Terror (1-1) notched a pair of goals in the game's first 12:09 to open a 2-0 lead at the break.

Chelsea Baker made four saves in the first 48 minutes for the Marlins (0-3), who also got a pair of stops from Emily Raddatz in the final 22 minutes.

Stephanie Thomson (Glen Burnie, Md./Chesapeake) made two saves for McDaniel.

On a long pass in from Katherine Jones (Westminster, Md./Winters Mill) that bounded off defenders and the goalkeeper, Lindsay Riordon (Monkton, Md./Hereford) found the backboard on the backside of the cage to stake the Green Terror to a 1-0 lead 5:40 into the game.

Off a corner in the 13th minute, Mandy Pickard (Hampstead, Md./North Carroll) dribbled by her defender and knocked a ball off the goalkeeper's stick and into the cage to double the lead.

Nearly five minutes into the second half, Heather Fay played a corner right to Valerie Nowlan, who took a shot from the top of the arc that cut the deficit in half.

Off a corner in the 48th minute, Jones played a short pass up top to Battista, who fired from long range to stretch the lead back to two.

Boerman pushed the lead to 4-1, finishing a solo run at the 47:43 mark.

At the 61:05, Heather Bias rebounded her own shot and save to set the final margin.

The Green Terror finished with a 13-4 advantage in shots and an 11-9 edge in penalty corners.

McDaniel returns to action at Washington and Lee on Saturday. Game time is 3:30 p.m.
