YORK, Pa. – April McFarland recorded a
hat trick, including the game-winner with 3:24 to play, to lead
York (Pa.) to a 4-3 victory over McDaniel in non-conference field
hockey action on Tuesday.
Trailing 3-2 after a 1-hour, 20-minute delay, the Spartans (6-6)
scored twice in the game's final 9:03 to snap a three-game
losing streak in the series.
Kristin Mele (Ellicott City, Md./River Hill) led
the Green Terror (5-5) with her second straight two-goal
game.
After Mele scooped up a loose ball in front of the cage to put
McDaniel on top 3-1 in the 48th minute, McFarland pulled
the hosts within one before lightning forced the teams to leave the
field.
After the delay, Megan Spangler tallied an
unassisted goal at the 60:57 mark to even the game before McFarland
tipped in a long feed for the game-winner.
Mele opened the scoring, finishing a Michelle Fluty
(Huntingtown, Md./Calvert) rebound off a shot and feed
just 1:01 into the contest.
McFarland tipped home a Spangler pass at the 25:25 mark to even the
game before halftime.
Jamie Smith (Pasadena, Md./Chesapeake) tapped home
a Mandy Pickard (Hampstead, Md./North Carroll)
slide pass to give McDaniel a 2-1 lead in the 40th
minute.
Erika Wawzyanick (Wantage, N.J./High Point
Regional) made five saves for the Green Terror while
Claire Rekitzke made four stops for
York.
The Spartans finished with a 23-11 advantage in shots and 17-4
advantage in penalty corners.
McDaniel returns to action at Swarthmore on Saturday. Game time is
2 p.m.
