WESTMINSTER, Md. – Tyler McCambridge
rushed for 162 of Moravian's 388 yards on the ground to lead
the way in a 42-3 victory at McDaniel in the Centennial Conference
(CC) football opener for both teams on Saturday.
Eric Zwilsky (Knoxville, Md./Brunswick)
rushed for 65 yards to led the Green Terror (1-1, 0-1 CC), who were
held to just 113 yards of total offense while the Greyhouunds (2-0,
1-0 CC) rolled up 500 yards in all.
After McDaniel netted 16 yards on five plays, Moravian
forced a punt. Taking over his own 34, McCambridge keyed a
five-play, 66-yard drive with two rushes totaling 51 yards,
including a 37-yard scamper to the end zone with 10:18 on the
first-quarter clock.
After forcing a second Travis Wenrich
(Wernersville, Pa./Conrad Weiser) punt after six plays and
13 yards, McCambridge went back to work. After a four-yard run and
31-yard Marc Braxmeier-to-Tyler
Hersch pass play, McCambridge went off the left side for
13 yards but a chop block brought the play back, eventually forcing
the lone Greyhound punt of the day.
The first of five three-and-out drives gave the ball back
to Moravian at its own 36.
Three Tyler deRouen runs for a total of
29 yards coupled with a Braxmeier completion to Morgan
deRouen set the Greyhounds up at the Green Terror
17.
On the next play, Braxmeier lofted the ball into the left
corner of the end zone where Tyler Williams stole
the ball out of the hands of one of the McDaniel defensive backs
for the score with 27 seconds to play in the first quarter.
A Derek Protasiewicz sack and forced
fumble deep in McDaniel's own end on the ensuing possession
led directly to a Don Maxwell eight-yard fumble
return for a touchdown, stretching the lead to 21-0 after
Brian Reckenbeil's extra point.
T.J. Develin (Boyertown, Pa./Boyertown
Area) took the next kickoff 86 yards to the end zone but
an illegal block in the back near midfield brought the ball back to
the McDaniel 39.
Three plays and three yards later, Wenrich punted the ball
back to Moravian.
McCambridge capped the next 10-play, 78-yard march with a
nine-yard carry for this second score of the day. McCambridge
accounted for 55 of the yards on the drive.
McCambridge got his third touchdown of the day on the next
Greyhound possession with a four-yard run up the middle, pushing
the lead to 35-0 with 2:13 to play in the first half.
After a missed field goal on its first second-half
possession and a three-and-out from McDaniel, Braxmeier found
Zachary Sigley in the front-right corner of the
end zone for a three-yard connection and stretch the lead to
42-0.
Two 10-yard runs from Tyler deRouen and a pass
interference call keyed eight-play drive.
With 1:32 to play in the third quarter, the Green Terror
took over at the Moravian 25 after Sam Cox (Towson,
Md./Towson) recovered a fumble.
Zach Swope (Jessup, Md./Hammond) threw an
apparent interception on the first play of the drive but a
roughing-the-passer call gave McDaniel new life.
Two Zwilsky rushes for seven yards and a sack set up a
38-yard Jay Leonard (Westminster, Md./Westminster)
for the Green Terror's only points of the day.
In addition to McCabridge's 162 yards, deRouen
rushed for 93 while Ryan Rempe went for 66.
Braxmeier completed 9 of 13 passes for 108 yards,
including the two touchdown tosses.
The three McDaniel quarterbacks combined for a 4-for-15
day through the air, accounting for just 30 total yards.
Mike Weick (Holland, Pa./Penn Charter)
keyed the defense with a game-high 12 tackles. Wenrich added 11
stops while Paul Smith (Woodlawn, Md./Western
Tech) and Aaron Slaughter (Baltimore,
Md./Loyola) had eight tackles and a pass breakup
each.
The Green Terror returns to action at Catholic on
Saturday. Game time is 1 p.m.
