HAVERFORD, Pa. – Kristin Mele (Ellicott City,
Md./River Hill) recorded two goals, including the game
winner 1:54 into the first overtime to lead McDaniel to a 3-2
victory over Haverford in Centennial Conference (CC) field hockey
action on Saturday.
The Green Terror (8-10, 5-5 CC) finished in a three-way tie for
fifth place in the conference standings. Dickinson earned the spot
by virtue of a 2-0 record against McDaniel and the Fords (9-9, 5-5
CC) and will play at Washington, who defeated the Red Devils 3-2 on
Saturday, in the first-round game on Wednesday.
Trailing 2-1 with 6:07 to play, Michelle Fluty
(Huntingtown, Md./Calvert) finished a Lindsey
McDonald (Germantown, Md./Damascus) assist to knot the
game and eventually force overtime, where Mele rebounded her own
shot and put it back for the game-winner.
Roxanne Jaffe staked Haverford to a 1-0 lead just
3:10 into the game, converting a Zoe Lloyd assist
on a penalty corner before Mele evened the game in the
20th minute.
At the 49:24 mark, Josie Ferri blasted a shot from
the top-right to give the Fords the lead once again before the
Green Terror scored the game's final two for the
win.
McDaniel finished with an 11-6 advantage in shots but Haverford had
a 20-11 edge in penalty corners.
Erika Wawzyanick (Wantage, N.J./High Point
Regional) made three saves in goal for the Green
Terror while
Maggie Cronin had four.
