WESTMINSTER, Md. – Brittany Bland
recorded a goal and an assist to lead No. 10 Johns Hopkins to a 3-1
victory over McDaniel in Centennial Conference (CC) field hockey
action on Wednesday.
The Blue Jays (15-2, 8-1 CC) held a 9-3 edge in shots but a
commanding 21-2 advantage in penalty corners to hand the Green
Terror (7-10, 4-5 CC) its fourth straight loss and set up a
showdown with third-ranked Ursinus on Saturday for home-field
advantage in next week's CC tournament.
McDaniel needs a victory at Haverford on Saturday and other results
to fall its way on the final day of the regular season to make it
into the five-team tournament field.
In an up-and-down first half played mostly between the 25-yard
lines, Johns Hopkins dented the scoreboard in the 21st
minute off of one of its 12 first-half corners.
Bland centered a long pass from the left wing where Adair
Landy tapped it home for a 1-0 lead at the
intermission.
At the 49:26 mark, Bland knocked in a rebound to double the
advantage before Andrea Vandersall collected a
loose ball in the 56th minute and pushed it through the
goalkeeper's legs for a 3-0 lead.
Kristin Mele (Ellicott City, Md./River Hill) broke
up the shutout in the 65th minute, redirecting a long
hit from Mandy Pickard (Hampstead, Md./North
Carroll).
Erika Wawzyanick (Wantage, N.J./High Point
Regional) made four saves in goal for the Green
Terror while
Sophia Tieu had two.
Game time on Saturday is 1 p.m.
