NCAA Committee on Infractions Report
In 2019, McDaniel College self-reported an isolated situation involving our field hockey coach communicating with a prospective student-athlete prior to receiving authorization to do so. In addition to reporting this matter, the college immediately began an internal review and imposed several measures to strengthen protocols within the Athletics department.
The college has cooperated with the NCAA and the Committee on Infractions (COI) throughout the process. In its decision, the COI said, “The violations in this case stemmed from the mistakes of an inexperienced, first-time head coach."
College Statement
"McDaniel College takes its responsibility to follow the rules and regulations set forth by the NCAA seriously. This is the reason why the college self-reported a coach communicating with a prospective student-athlete prior to securing appropriate releases in 2019. In addition to reporting this matter, the college immediately began an internal review and took prompt action, including additional training and strengthening department protocols. Throughout the process, the college has cooperated with the NCAA and the Committee on Infractions and believes the severity of the penalties is unwarranted. Nevertheless, the college acknowledges that an isolated mistake was made. We remain committed to our student-athletes and an athletic program that reflects the First Principles of the college."
The following additional sanctions have been imposed by the NCAA:
- Two years of probation.
- A comprehensive compliance review of McDaniel’s athletics department by an outside agency with athletics compliance expertise.
Self-imposed sanctions included:
- The field hockey head coach was suspended for one month between March 1 and March 31, 2021, from all recruiting events.
- The field hockey head coach was required to attend the 2021 NCAA Regional Rules Seminar and lead an athletics department discussion on NCAA rules.
