Baseball Drops 12-7 Road Decision at Dickinson, Stays in Second

CARLISLE, Pa. – Dickinson scored eight runs across the fourth and fifth innings to erase an early deficit and defeat the McDaniel College baseball team 12-7 on Friday to wrap up a home-and-home series.

The loss snapped a seven-game winning streak for the Green Terror (27-11, 10-6), who remain in second place in the Centennial Conference standings with two games to go in the regular season. McDaniel sits a game ahead of third-place Washington College and two games behind first-place Johns Hopkins.

The Red Devils (20-15-1, 6-9-1) struck first on an RBI-single in the bottom of the first inning to go ahead 1-0. Junior Ethan Haddock drove in fellow junior DJ Stolba on an RBI-single to tie the score in the second, and graduate student Shane Daly gave the Green Terror a 2-1 lead on an RBI-single that scored junior Quinn Dean

Dickinson tied the game with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the second, but McDaniel answered with two runs in the third on consecutive RBI-doubles from junior Ben Davis and sophomore Anthony Cerone, putting the visitors ahead 4-2.

The lead held until the fourth inning, when the Red Devils scored five in the frame to take a three-run lead. A two-run single tied the score at 4-4, and a sacrifice fly put Dickinson in front. The Red Devils capped off the inning with a two-run homer to make the score 7-4.

Three more runs came across to score in the fifth inning for Dickinson, as the Red Devils hit an RBI-double and scored on a fielding error and a sacrifice fly to increase the lead to 10-4.

Dean drove in junior Shea McKenna on a sacrifice fly in the sixth to cut the deficit in half, 10-5. The Red Devils added another run in the bottom half on an RBI-single for an 11-5 lead.

The Green Terror plated two runs in the seventh on an RBI-double from Cerone and an RBI-single from McKenna to shave the deficit down to four, but Dickinson scored on an error in the eighth and escaped a jam in the top of the ninth to win 12-7 and split the home-and-home.

Davis, Cerone and McKenna each went 3-for-5 from the plate, with Cerone driving in two runs and Davis and McKenna each driving in one. Haddock had two base hits and an RBI while Daly and Dean had a hit and an RBI. Stolba went 2-for-5 and scored a run in the loss.

First-year Alex Von Behren dropped his first decision of the year, striking out two and walking three while allowing six earned runs on five hits in three innings as the starter. Sophomore Preston Yost tossed three innings in relief, racking up three strikeouts and one walk while only allowing three hits.

The Green Terror wrap up the regular season at home against Swarthmore in a Sunday doubleheader. First pitch is set for 12 pm from Preston Field.
