CARLISLE, Pa. - Junior
Caitlin Boden totaled three hits and three RBIs on the day to lead the McDaniel College softball team to a doubleheader split with conference rival Dickinson on Tuesday.
The Green Terror (12-17, 4-6) scored five runs in the first two innings before holding on late to win the opener over the Red Devils (10-16, 5-7).
Game 1: McDaniel 5, Dickinson 4
A throwing error following a Boden single plated the opener's first run as senior
Ryan Smith scored on the error for a 1-0 lead. Senior
Taylor Applefeld then reached base on another error, allowing Boden and sophomore
Ally McBride to score to go ahead 3-0 in the first.
The Red Devils tied the game 3-3 in the bottom half of the first on an RBI-double, and RBI-single and an RBI-triple. McDaniel claimed the lead in the next half inning as McBride drove in first-year
Gianna Apostolakos on an RBI-groundout and Boden hit an RBI-single up the middle to score Smith, putting the Green Terror up 5-3 after two.
The 5-3 lead held until the sixth inning, when Dickinson cut the deficit to one after scoring on a wild pitch. The Red Devils left the tying run on base to end the game in the seventh, giving the Green Terror a 5-4 win in the opener.
Smith, Boden and senior
Chole Candeloro all had two base hits in the win while Smith scored two runs and Boden collected an RBI. McBride had an RBI and a run scored in three plate appearances. Apostolakos and sophomore
Cameron Kelly also had base hits in the opener.
Kelly earned her eighth win in the circle, tossing a complete game while totaling two strikeouts, eight walks, four earned runs and five hits on 130 pitches.
Game 2: Dickinson 6, McDaniel 3
A three-spot in the second inning put the Red Devils ahead early in game two. Dickinson scored on an RBI-single and a two-run single to make the score 3-0 after two innings.
Boden answered in the top of the third with an RBI-triple to score McBride for McDaniel's first run. The Red Devils answered in the bottom half of the inning, scoring on an error for a 4-1 advantage.
Boden reached base on an error in the fifth, allowing Apostolakos to score to cut the deficit in half, 4-2. An RBI-double and a sacrifice fly in the sixth plated two more runs for Dickinson, increasing its lead to 6-2. Apostolakos would score again in the seventh on an RBI-groundout for Smith but the Green Terror could not mount a late comeback, falling 6-3.
Boden went 1-for-4 with two RBIs in game two while Apostalakos had two hits and scored twice. Smith had an RBI in four plate appearances while Applefeld and senior
Morgan Rogers each finished with a base hit.
Rogers took the loss in game two, totaling three walks, three earned runs and four hits in six innings pitched.
The Green Terror travel to Allentown, Pa. on Saturday to face Muhlenberg in the final leg of an eight-game road trip. First pitch of the doubleheader is set for 1 pm.
