Cerone Homers, Drives in Two in 5-4 Loss to No. 3 Johns Hopkins

WESTMINSTER, Md. – Sophomore Anthony Cerone totaled three hits, two RBIs and hit his third homer of the season to lead the McDaniel College baseball team in a 5-4 loss to No. 3 Johns Hopkins on Friday from Preston Field.

Three of the last four meetings between the Green Terror (20-10, 3-5) and Blue Jays (25-4, 8-0) have been decided by one run, dating back to April 14th, 2025. 

Johns Hopkins plated the first run in the top of the second inning, taking a 1-0 lead on a sacrifice fly. An RBI-single in the fourth gave the visitors a 2-0 lead.

Cerone answered in the bottom half of the fourth with a solo homer, his third long ball of the season. The Blue Jays followed with a two-run homer in the fifth to go ahead 4-1.

The 4-1 score held until the eighth, when the Green Terror rallied with three runs in the frame to tie the game. Sophomore Thomas Mezzullo smacked an RBI-double to center field to score junior Shea McKennaand Cerone added an RBI-single to score Mezzullo. Graduate Student Shane Daly knotted the score 4-4 on an RBI-single to drive in junior Ethan Haddock.

A bases-loaded walk in the top of the ninth scored the go-ahead run for the Blue Jays, and the Green Terror stranded the tying run on base in the bottom half of the ninth to end the game.

Cerone reached base in all four of his plate appearances, going 3-for-3 with two RBIs, a run and a walk. Daly had three hits in four at-bats from the leadoff spot while Mezzullo went 1-for-5 with an RBI and a run scored. Haddock finished 1-for-4 with a run in the loss.

Junior Jake Young took the loss in relief, totaling four walks and one strikeout. Sophomore Preston Yost got his first career start, pitching four innings and striking out two while walking three and allowing two earned runs on three base hits.

The Green Terror travel to Lancaster, Pa. tomorrow for a conference doubleheader with Franklin & Marshall. First pitch is set for 12 pm.
