Luke Wood threw five scoreless innings in his first collegiate start to lead the McDaniel College baseball team to an 8-4 victory over Lebanon Valley Friday at the Ripken Experience.
The Green Terror (1-3) split a doubleheader with the Dutchmen in the first-ever meeting between the two teams.
Junior
Shea McKenna totaled three hits and three RBIs on the day, going 3-for-7, while sophomore
Thomas Mezzullo also had three hits, including an RBI-double. Graduate student
Shane Daly hit a solo home run while sophomore
Cameron Simon went 1-for-3 with a double and two RBIs.
Game 1: Lebanon Valley 6, McDaniel 4
The Dutchmen (1-2) scored two runs in the top of the seventh to take a 6-4 victory, scoring six unanswered runs after McDaniel jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the first.
McKenna started the scoring with an RBI-single before Mezzullo doubled it with an RBI-double. McKenna scored on a fielder's choice while Mezzullo scored on a wild pitch as the Green Terror scored four runs on two hits while taking advantage of one Lebanon Valley error.
McDaniel maintained its four-run lead into the fourth inning where the Dutchmen scored three runs on just one hit thanks to a bases loaded walk and back-to-back RBI ground outs.
The visitors tied the game in the top of the sixth on a two-out bunt by Daniel Palmieri.
The Dutchmen scored two runs with two outs in the top of the seventh on consecutive RBI hits by Kody Phillips and Tyler Satterfield.
Mezzullo had three of McDaniel's six hits, going 3-for-4.
Owen Berry picked up his first win of the season in relief, scattering four hits over the final six innings with two strikeouts and just one walk on 70 pitches.
Game 2: McDaniel 8, Lebanon Valley 4
Just like the opener, the Green Terror struck early, scoring six runs on just one hit after drawing five walks and two hit-by-pitch. McKenna had a two-run single to start the scoring as McDaniel sent 10 batters to the plate.
The Green Terror added a run on a Simon RBI-double in the third before scoring another in the fourth on a solo home run by Daly. It was his first home run of the season and the 10th of his career.
The Dutchmen got on the board with an RBI-double by Devin Kreger in the top of the sixth before adding three unearned runs in the top of the ninth to provide the final score.
McKenna went 2-for-3 with two RBIs while Simon was 1-for-3 with two RBIs.
McDaniel scored eight runs on just five hits while drawing seven walks.
Wood picked up his first career win in his first career start, throwing five scoreless innings. He scattered five hits over 5.2 innings with five strikeouts. Senior
Tyson Nercessian earned his second career save and first since March 18, 2023 in an 8-4 win over Hood in which he also totaled three innings of work.
McDaniel returns to the Ripken Experience on Saturday, hosting a non-conference doubleheader against Penn State Brandywine beginning at 4 p.m.
