BRIDGEWATER, Va. – The McDaniel College softball team opened the season with a doubleheader split at the Bridgewater Softball Invitational on Saturday.
The Green Terror (1-1) opened competition with a 13-4 win over Wilmington (OH), followed by a 1-0 loss against host Bridgewater (VA) in the late game.
McDaniel 13, Wilmington (OH) 4 (Game One)
An RBI single from junior
Keonna Gonzalez opened the scoring in the first inning, scoring senior
Ryan Smith from second to take a 1-0 lead. First Year
Emma McPherson then reached on a fielder's choice, allowing sophomore

Taylor Applefeld completed a four-run first inning to put the Green Terror ahead early.
McDaniel tacked on three more runs in the second on an RBI single from Gonzalez, an RBI double from sophomore
Cameron Kelly and a sacrifice fly from McPherson, making the score 7-0 after two. First Year
Gianna Apostolakos then launched a two-run triple in the third to increase the lead to nine.
A three-run fourth from the Quakers (0-1) cut the lead down to 9-4, but the Green Terror responded by scoring the game's final four runs to seal the win in six. RBI hits from Guevara and Applefeld secured a 13-4 win in the season opener.
Apostolakos went 4-for-4 in her first collegiate game, batting in three runs and scoring once. Gonzalez went 3-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored while Smith, McBride and Kelly each had multi-hit games.
Kelly got the start in the circle, tossing a complete game while allowing seven hits and four earned runs. She struck out three batters and walked one on 86 pitches thrown.
Bridgewater (VA) 1, McDaniel 0 (Game Two)
The game remained scoreless until the fourth inning when the Eagles (1-0) crossed the plate on an RBI groundout. Still trailing by one in the top of the seventh, Gonzalez reached on a walk before Kelly grounded into a double play, leaving the tying run on base to end the game.
Smith, Applefeld and first year
Erin Thayer all had hits for the Green Terror (1-1) while Gonzalez reached base with a walk. McBride got the start in game two and pitched all six innings, totaling four strikeouts while allowing three hits and one earned run on 67 pitches.
McDaniel will travel to Fredericksburg, Va. on Wednesday to face Mary Washington in a doubleheader. First pitch is set for 1 pm.
