Utterback Leads McDaniel to First Win, 17-4 at Goucher

TOWSON, Md. - The McDaniel College women's lacrosse team used an eight-goal first-quarter to take control early en route to a decisive 17-4 road win over Goucher Wednesday at Beldon Field.

The Green Terror (1-1) posted its 12th consecutive win over the Gophers, including their seventh in-a-row on the road in the series.

Senior Addison Utterback led the way with four goals and six points, both career highs. She had a hand in four of the team's eight goals in the first quarter with two goals and two assists. Senior Kat Thayer also had six points with three goals and three assists, picking up all three assists in the opening quarter.

McDaniel had four players record hat-tricks. Senior Charlotte Alexander picked up her fifth with three goals and one assist while first-year Olivia Foulke recorded the first of her career with three goals. Alexander scored the first goal of the game just 15 seconds in.

Seven players scored a goal for the Green Terror and eight registered at least one point. First-year Grace Legacy netted her first career goal with the team's seventh of the first quarter. Legacy also had the first two assists of her career.

The Green Terror scored the game's first 10 goals to take a commanding lead after Utterback scored her third with 11:06 remaining in the second off an assist from Alexander.

Camden West got Goucher (0-1) on the board with 8:08 to play in the second and McDaniel led 10-1 at halftime. The visitors held a 24-5 advantage in shots in the first 30 minutes, won eight of 12 draw controls, and held an 11-5 edge in ground balls.

The Green Terror maintained its 10-goal lead after three quarters, 12-2, before adding five fourth-quarter tallies, including three from Thayer. First-year Julianna Blair picked up her first career point with an assist on Thayer's second goal.

McDaniel totaled a season-high 40 shots, forced 18 turnovers, won 14 draw controls, and scored three free-position goals.

Junior Emily Conklin finished with two goals, one assist, three points, three ground balls, three caused turnovers, and four draw controls. Alexander also had three caused turnovers while Thayer added four ground balls, one caused turnover and two draw controls.

Senior Caleigh Kohr made two saves in her 50th career appearance in goal before giving way to first-year Nicole Ruther who had three in her first career appearance. Sophomore Audrey Musser made her first appearance of the season and the fifth of her career, playing the final six minutes.

McDaniel makes its home debut on Saturday when it hosts Randolph-Macon. Opening draw is at 1 p.m.
