Two Late Goals Lead Swarthmore Past McDaniel on Homecoming

WESTMINSTER, Md. - Two goals in the final three minutes led Swarthmore to a Centennial Conference road victory over the McDaniel College men's soccer team on Saturday at the Soccer Complex, 4-2.

After starting the season unbeaten in its first seven games, the Green Terror (6-3-1, 1-3 CC) have lost three-straight conference contests. Saturday also marked the first loss in six home games this season for McDaniel.

It was also the first regular-season home loss for the Green Terror since Sept. 30, 2025, snapping a nine-game unbeaten streak.

McDaniel has allowed nine goals during its three-game losing streak after surrendering just five in its first seven contests this season.

The Garnet (3-6-2, 2-2 CC) led 2-0 until the 82nd minute when the Green Terror scored the first of back-to-back goals in just over five minutes on a penalty kick by senior Charlie Olson in the 82nd minute. The goals was the second in three penalty kick attempts this season for Olson who is second on the team with six goals.

McDaniel tied the game in the 87th minute when senior Eyuel Reta scored his first goal of the season and first since Sept. 25, 2024 in a 1-0 win at Gwynedd Mercy. First-year Callen Kleinschmidt picked up his second assist and fourth point on the play.

After letting the Green Terror battled their way back from a two-goal deficit, Swarthmore retook the lead just over a minute later when Len Yamabe scored his first goal of the season and the 17th of his career, including sixth game-winner.

Joost Almekinders provided the final margin when he capped the scoring with a penalty kick goal in the 89th minute.

The Garnet held a 21-12 edge in shots, including three goals on 10 shots in the second half. First-year Gavin Yartymyk finished seven saves.

The physical contest featured seven cards, including six on McDaniel.

The Green Terror wrap up non-conference play this season on Tuesday when they host local rival Stevenson at the Soccer Complex beginning at 4 p.m.
