Monn, Gayle Post Wins in Dual at No. 12 Washington and Lee

LEXINGTON, Va. - Seniors Thomas Monn and Zeke Gayle each posted victories as the No. 21 ranked McDaniel College men's wrestling team fell in a match-up of top 25 teams Saturday, falling to No. 12 Washington and Lee on the road, 31-10.

Four of the five dual match opponents for the Green Terror (2-3) this season have been ranked in the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) rankings.

The Generals (4-0) jumped out to a 10-0 lead after wins in the first three matches before Monn, ranked second nationally and No. 1 in region 3 at 149 pounds, recorded an 11-1 major decision over Evan Linder who is ranked third in region 4.

With the win, Monn picked up his 20th win of the season and 18th bonus-point win, improving to 20-0 overall and 5-0 in dual matches. It was also the 122nd win of his career, leaving him four shy of the program record held by Brock Glotfelty '11.

Holding a six-point lead, Washington and Lee pushed its advantage to 27-4 with wins in the next four consecutive matches before Gayle earned his sixth win of the season and third by fall with a victory at 197 pounds.

It was Gayle's first match of the season at 197 pounds and ninth of his career, including first since Jan. 28, 2023, after 41 at heavyweight.

Six of the Generals' eight victories were posted by wrestlers who are currently ranked in the region, four of whom are also ranked nationally. However, McDaniel battled tough in three of those, losing by a combined total of just 13 points.

Senior Andre Allen fell by only two points at 157 pounds to Liam Flanagan who is ranked first in the region and 11th nationally. First-year Andrew Dolezel fell at 141 to Skyler Hickman who is ranked second in the region and 15th nationally, 5-0, while first-year Andrew Yuen fell at 133 to Vincent Ziccardi who is ranked first in the region and 14th nationally, 11-5.

The Green Terror return to action tomorrow in the Jim Crytzer Invitational hosted by Washington and Lee. Competition begins at 9 a.m. and fans can follow along here.
