Volleyball Drops Tri-Match in Season Opener at Stevenson

OWINGS MILLS, Md. - Senior Kailey Young totaled 19 kills on the day as the McDaniel College volleyball team dropped both contests in a tri-match with Stevenson and Notre Dame Maryland to open the season Saturday.

Match 1: Stevenson 3, McDaniel 0

The Green Terror fell in the opener to the Mustangs in straight sets.

After falling behind early and trailing for most of the first set, McDaniel battled back late and used a 6-1 run to take a 20-19 lead. Stevenson then used a 6-1 run of their own to stop the comeback and win the opening set.

Set two was a back-and-forth affair with five ties and four lead changes. The Green Terror held a 23-19 lead before the Mustangs (2-0) closed on a 6-0 run to seal the win, highlighted by five kills and a service ace.

After opening the third set on a 4-1 run, Stevenson used a 6-0 run midway through the set to pull away and claim a 25-20 win to secure the sweep.

Young finished the opening match with a team-best nine kills on 27 attempts while junior Abigayle Bowley collected eight kills. Sophomore Kaylee Comstock led the charge defensively with 17 assists, 10 digs and two service aces.

Match 2: Notre Dame Maryland 3, McDaniel 1

The Green Terror (0-2) pulled out a close win in set two against the Gators but ultimately fell 3-1 to close out the tri-match.

The Gators maintained a lead through the early portion of the first set before McDaniel stormed back and cut the deficit to 16-14. The Green Terror completed a late run to tie the contest a 23-23 before Notre Dame scored the final two points to squeak out a close win.

The Gators (1-1) again started strong in set two, taking an 11-4 lead before McDaniel began to chip away at the lead. Trailing 22-16, the Green Terror scored six straight points to tie the set, taking advantage of four attack errors from the Gators. With the score again tied 24-24, McDaniel scored the decisive points on back-to-back kills from Young to win 26-24.

The Green Terror surged ahead 5-0 to begin set three, with Comstock starting the set with three straight aces. Notre Dame erased the deficit and battled back to break a 25-25 tie to take the third set.

The Gators then closed out the contest with a 25-17 fourth set win to take the match 3-1.

Bowley led the attack with 11 kills on 23 attempts while Comstock supplied 26 assists, 14 digs and six aces. Young finished with 10 kills and first year Mariya Carson chipped in with nine kills and two block assists.

The Green Terror hit the road on Friday to face Eastern Mennonite at 7 p.m.
